Encapsulated within Mark Clowney’s body of work is both the exploration of the mundane- dog walks with Billie, afternoons at the pool, a plethora of self-portraits- juxtaposed with parades, flashes of wild nights, and candid bulb-lit visages in sweaty, dark places. As a medium, photography allows him to both be present and dematerialize in social settings. This symbiosis lends itself to capturing unbridled emotions in his subjects, creating images in which they are responding to neither Clowney nor his camera independently, but to the union between the two. His self-published photobooks are released in limited quantities and can be found annually at the Pittsburgh Zine Fair.
